Salzburg makes Mozart’s early world tangible: his birthplace in the Getreidegasse, the family’s later residence across the river and the church-and-court setting around the cathedral. Build the trip around these distinct places, rather than treating every Mozart sign as the same story. Leave an evening for live music and time simply to walk beside the Salzach.
Mozart places worth your time

Salzburg Cathedral & DomQuartier
Domplatz · ResidenzplatzMozart was baptized in the cathedral; its font gives the visit a concrete biographical link. The cathedral and the DomQuartier museum route are distinct visits, so choose according to your interest in church music, architecture or the wider history of the prince-archbishops.
Check separate tickets, access and church-service times. Do not assume one ticket covers every interior.

Mozart’s Birthplace
Getreidegasse 9 · AltstadtThe yellow house in Getreidegasse brings Mozart’s childhood into focus. Mozart was born here in 1756; the museum introduces the family, early life and original instruments. This is a different museum from the Residence at Makartplatz.
The Birthplace is not step-free accessible. Read the museum’s access information before choosing your visits.

Mozart Residence
Makartplatz 8Cross the river for the Mozart family’s later residence. Parts of the building were reconstructed after wartime destruction; the museum reopened in 1996. Treat it as a separate chapter in the family’s story, rather than a duplicate of the Birthplace.
The museum describes accessible entry via Theatergasse, with staff assistance. Arrange access ahead of your visit.

Stiftung Mozarteum
Schwarzstraße 26–28 · MirabellThe illuminated glass foyer in the photograph connects the Mozarteum’s historic concert buildings. Completed in 2022, it received Austria’s State Prize for Architecture in 2023. Look at the foundation’s concert programme as well as the visitor attractions. Mozartwoche is a particular reason to plan a winter trip, but use the current programme to choose dates and performers rather than relying on an old festival calendar.
“Mozarteum” can refer to different institutions. Follow the hall and address on the actual ticket.

Mirabell Palace & Gardens
MirabellplatzLeopold Mozart and his children Wolfgang and Nannerl performed in the Marble Hall. Use the gardens as a pause between the Residence and the rest of your day, and check the named room and programme if choosing a modern palace concert.
Interior access depends on events. At our October 2026 check, the Orangerie Garden was closed for redesign until December 2026; check current notices.

Hohensalzburg Fortress
FestungsbergMake the fortress a deliberate excursion rather than an extra stop squeezed between museums. A concert or dinner booking needs its own arrival plan, including the route up and the journey down afterwards.
Check what the particular ticket includes. General sightseeing access does not automatically include a concert or dinner.
Official visitor information ↗A Mozart walk
Start at Salzburg Cathedral, continue to Mozart’s Birthplace and cross the Salzach on Staatsbrücke. Continue to the Mozart Residence, Stiftung Mozarteum and Mirabell. The five numbered places above follow the map in the same order; Hohensalzburg Fortress is a separate uphill visit.

GETREIDEGASSE
On Mozart’s street
Narrow façades and wrought-iron signs give the street around Mozart’s Birthplace its character. Take a little time around Getreidegasse 9, before crossing the Salzach towards the Mozart Residence.
Old-town streets, steps and the climb towards the fortress need separate consideration for limited mobility. Ask each venue about the exact route rather than assuming a compact city is entirely step-free.
Choose your concert
Mirabell Palace, the Hohensalzburg Fortress and St. Peter host different kinds of musical evenings. Read the venue, meeting point and inclusions carefully. A dinner-and-concert ticket may require arrival well before the music begins; follow the details for the exact date you book.

A museum pair, not two names for one place
The Birthplace is in Getreidegasse; the Residence is at Makartplatz across the river. Decide whether to visit one or both before buying tickets. Check closure notices and combined-ticket validity on the Foundation’s own pages.
Dinner concerts need an earlier start
Read the meeting time, meal arrangements and access instructions, especially at St. Peter and the fortress. Allow for the correct entrance, the walk uphill or a transport connection. The time a concert begins is not necessarily the time a dinner ticket asks you to arrive.
Check the route around Makartplatz
The city’s multi-year works programme began around Schwarzstraße in September 2026, with Makartplatz phases planned from 2027. Check current walking routes and hotel access, especially if you need a step-free route.

ALTER MARKT
A pause by Café Tomaselli
The Café Tomaselli kiosk at Alter Markt sits among the old town’s Mozart stops. Make a café break part of the day, with time to watch the square before your evening performance.

Salzburger Nockerln
The local dessert has its own airy “mountain peaks”. Ask your restaurant about portions and preparation time, especially if you are heading to a concert afterwards.
More of the city

Two sides of the Salzach
From the river you can see how the fortress and old town fit together. Getreidegasse and the cathedral sit on one bank; the Mozart Residence and Mirabell await on the other. Use the riverside as an unhurried connection between visits.
Where to stay
Altstadt · The old town
Consider the old town for Getreidegasse, Mozart’s birthplace and St. Peter. Check the access arrangements if arriving by car and ask the hotel about luggage drop-off.
Mirabell & Andräviertel
The right-bank neighbourhoods are worth considering for Mirabell concerts and the Mozart Residence at Makartplatz. Compare the walk across the river for your other plans.
Near the main railway station
Useful for a rail arrival or a wider Austrian trip. Balance convenience with the actual evening route to your concert, rather than choosing by station distance alone.

Getting here
Salzburg Airport (SZG) and Salzburg Hauptbahnhof both serve the city. Check current local transport and your hotel’s arrival instructions. The tourist board reports restrictions on ordinary vehicle access to the old town from July 2026; avoid assuming that a central hotel can be reached directly by car. Consider rail as well when combining Salzburg with Vienna.
Official visitor information ↗Combine Vienna and Salzburg
Consider a stay in both cities rather than two rushed day trips. Compare current rail services, stations, luggage arrangements and ticket conditions before choosing your flight dates. Two nights in each city is a useful starting point if you want a museum day and a concert in both.

Which Mozart museum should I choose?
Choose the Birthplace for the family’s early home and Mozart’s childhood. The Residence adds a later chapter and has an accessible entrance described by the museum. If you want both, spread the visits out rather than treating them as consecutive boxes to tick.
Old town, Mirabell or the railway station?
Choose the old town for Getreidegasse and St. Peter; compare the Mirabell side for the Residence and palace concerts. A station-area hotel can simplify a rail itinerary but adds a journey to the old town. The right choice depends on your actual evening venue.
What if it rains, or I need step-free access?
Build a rainy day around one substantial indoor visit with a nearby lunch stop. For step-free planning, contact the Residence about its Theatergasse entrance; the Birthplace is not barrier-free. Check the individual concert hall and hotel rather than relying on a general city description.
